The supporting cast of the English version help flesh out the reality of the film, often doing better than their celebrity counterparts. But, like her disappearing southern accent in X2, Paquinn can't maintain much consistency. (Yes, she plays a boy.) Sometimes she achieves the proper tone and cadence to make the voice believable. Paquin, on the other hand, stumbles through her job of voicing Ray Steam. Both Molina and Stewart do a fine job of bringing life to their characters and do their best to keep the dialog fluid with the mismatched mouth movements of the characters. Lending their voices to the English dub of the film are Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina, and Anna Paquin. (Thank Sony for their judicious elimination of this wealth of material- Otomo certainly wouldn't have devoted ten years to a project only to dump 25 percent of his footage). The release of this DVD marks the first time the English dubbed version has appeared uncut. When it was released in theaters, audiences were given two options: an English-dubbed version that was cut down by almost 30 minutes, and a full subtitled Japanese-language versions. So when Ray receives a package from his grandfather containing a small metal device with instructions to keep it safe, he quickly finds himself in the middle of a power struggle for the object known as a "steamball". Both of his forebears are brilliant inventors, specifically in the area of containing and coverting steam into energy, and in the film's super-industrialized version of 1866, their work is a hot commodity indeed. Ten years in the making, the film features close-ups that contain as much detail as the most cluttered wide shot (due in no small part to the animators' lack of production deadlines), and follows the adventures of Ray Steam, a thirteen year old inventor living in the shadow of his father and grandfather. Steamboy is an amazing hybrid of two- and three dimensional animation that truly offers a seamless visual universe. Rather than making a singular follow-up, Otomo combines a coming-of-age tale, an action film, a family drama, an origin story and a political commentary into one cohesive and spectacularly potent story. ![]() Which is why when its creator Katsuhiro Otomo finished his ten year project, Steamboy, I had only the highest hopes: Could he once again mix high-quality animation, compelling storytelling and brilliant direction in the service of another anime classic? The answer is a big yes, with a small no footnote after all, can anything live up to a decade of hype? Those looking for something as dark, complex, and adult as Akira are sure to be disappointed, but those who understand that this is a PG-13 adventure will embrace the end result: a classic Hollywood hybrid. ![]() That said, I have seen a few anime features I enjoyed, including Grave of the Fireflies and Porko Roso, but none have possessed the potency of Akira. Or anthropomorphic wolves in high school fly a pirate ship through space in order to save their princess, or a futuristic band of ten year olds with cat ears and huge eyes pilot fighting robots in order to save the earth- you get the idea. I especially was bored by the repetitive story lines- can a robot be human? Can it love? Since I'm not a robot, I really don't care. Even when people historically steered me towards other so-called "revolutionary" anime features (such as Ghost in the Shell or Metropolis), I only saw their technical limitations: poor matching of characters to their backgrounds, the lack of detail in wide shots. ![]()
